ABOUT GGHNCDC

On September 20, 2022, the Hilton Head Town Council took a groundbreaking step to safeguard its historic and culturally significant neighborhoods by establishing the Gullah Geechee Historic Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation.

This newly formed corporation was designed to serve the Town’s historic neighborhoods, encompassing Bay Gall, Big Hill, Chaplin, Gardner, Grassland, Jarvis, Jonesville, Marshland, Mitchelville, Spanish Wells, Squire Pope, and Stoney—each deeply rooted in the Island’s rich heritage.

Recognizing an urgent threat to these areas, the Town Council acknowledged the long-standing challenges these communities faced. A persistent lack of viable economic opportunities, insufficient access to safe and high-quality affordable housing, and limited availability of essential skills training and education programs had left these neighborhoods increasingly vulnerable. Without substantial investment and strategic intervention, these challenges would have continued to erode the fabric of these communities, jeopardizing their long-term sustainability.

The GGHNCDC centered its efforts on promoting cultural resources and safeguarding the Island’s historic communities, striving to:

  • Enhance the quality of life for residents.

  • Foster entrepreneurial growth and opportunity.

  • Prevent the displacement of long-standing communities due to gentrification.

  • Support the attraction, expansion, and retention of local businesses.

  • Offer guidance on land planning and sustainable development.

  • Advocate for and pursue affordable housing initiatives.

  • Identify and address critical infrastructure needs.

  • Provide essential financial opportunities to empower the community.
