About Spanish Wells
Flanked by Calibogue Sound, Old House Creek, and Broad River, the Spanish Wells community derives its name from Spanish explorers who dug freshwater wells along Broad Creek in the 16th century. Gullah residents engaged in fishing, crabbing, and oyster harvesting. The area was home to Charlie Simmons, Sr., known for his boat transportation services and fishing camp off Marshland Road. The Spanish Wells Cemetery is located near Calibogue Sound.
